The Showdown!

Review: New CDs from 50 Cent, Kanye West09/10/2007 4:08 PM, APBrett Johnson 50 Cent, "Curtis" (Interscope) and Kanye West, "Graduation" (Def Jam)
Hip-hop's latest battle between two of its biggest egos — Kanye West and 50 Cent — has been building like a title fight in Vegas. Before the Tuesday release of their respective CDs, "Graduation" and "Curtis," 50 challenged West to a televised debate, called him a "worker bee" while describing himself as a "boss," and vowed to retire if West outsold him during their debut week. In response, West has mostly downplayed Fiddy's bluster, re-channeling it as added publicity for his own release. The two share a Rolling Stone magazine cover posed nose-to-nose, evoking the great showdowns of our time.
If the contest was being judged solely on artistic vision rather than Soundscan tallies, however, West could claim a landslide victory. "Graduation" blends a different set of musical influences than West's past two efforts, 2004's "The College Dropout" and 2005's "Late Registration." Drawing from Daft Punk and Coldplay to loping, back-porch soul and '80s-era electro-disco rhythms, "Graduation" still sounds like a logical step forward. Yet "Curtis" sounds like Fiddy is standing in place, with the familiar bruising basslines and slick, synth-heavy productions that have transformed the former drug dealer into one of the top-selling recording artists of any genre.
As on his previous releases, West measures his overflowing arrogance with self-conscious dollops of doubt, humor and vulnerability. Meanwhile, Fiddy's outsized cockiness sounds like a comfortable artist repeating himself, afraid to tinker with his winning formulas.
To wit, on the radio-ready track "Good Life," featuring the digitally enhanced singing of T-Pain, West takes some of his adversary's own advice and paraphrases a line from Fiddy's 2003 smash "In Da Club": "50 told me go head switch your style up/ And if they hate, then let 'em hate and watch the money pile up."
The so-called "hate" West has received for his award-show outbursts, preppy fashion choices and unfiltered honesty results in a lot of explaining on his new album. On the haunting "Can't Tell Me Nothing," West alludes to his infamous "Bush hates black people" post-Hurricane Katrina comment: "I'm just saying how I feel man/ I ain't one of the Cosbys, I ain't go to Hillman," before speaking about himself facetiously, "I guess the money should've changed him/ I guess I should've forgot where I came from."
To avoid seeming soft and indecisive, elsewhere he undercuts apologies with knowing brashness. On the addictive "Barry Bonds" featuring Lil Wayne, West boasts: "Top five MCs you gotta rewind me/ I'm high up on the line, you gotta get behind me/ but my head so big you can't sit behind me."
By disc's end, on the captivating "Big Brother," West even dares bite the hand the feeds him, detailing the mild beef but ultimate reverence he has for his label boss Jay-Z.
Neither self-deprecation nor humility is part of Fiddy's equation. He's more concerned about squashing rivals, real and imagined ("My Gun Go Off," "I Still Kill"), highlighting his street pedigree and reminding us of his bottomless wealth.
The disc is mostly standard-issue gangsta talk that only in moments recalls vintage Fiddy such as "Wanksta" or "P.I.M.P." For example, on the menacing funk of "Fully Loaded Clip," Fiddy takes aim at rap/R&B elite who've gone soft, snickering: "When Jay and Beyonce was um-um kissing/ I was cooking 1,000 grams in my kitchen/ When Nas was telling Kelis, "I love you, boo"/ I was shining my nine, you know how I do." And over the deep bass thuds of "I Get Money," which features a classic Audio Two sample, Fiddy gloats: "They callin' me cocky/ I come up out the jeweler, they callin' me Rocky/ It's the ice on my neck man, the wrist and my left hand/ bling like BA-LOW, you like my style."
As much as Fiddy banks on ruthless rhymes and nouveau riche bragging, he also fancies himself a rugged sex symbol. Hence the obligatory cuts that reveal his sensitive thug side, notably, "Amusement Park" and "Peep Show," the latter featuring a lewd verse from Eminem. However, the tracks capture little of the magic of past winners such as the touching "21 Questions" or the seductive "Candy Shop."
And when Fiddy enlists Justin Timberlake and Timbaland for "Ayo Technology," Robin Thicke on "Follow My Lead" and Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger on "Fire," it feels like a rapper in a rut desperate to maintain his pop stranglehold. The songs aren't tough listens by any means, but Fiddy is going the easy route to appeal to the masses.
Ill-advised collaborations detract from West's "Graduation" as well. "Drunk and Hot Girls," an exasperated dis of club floozies featuring Mos Def, has a grating and humorless hook. And "Homecoming" includes an unremarkable chorus sung by Coldplay's Chris Martin. Still, West's miscues result from a risk-taking spirit that Fiddy lacks. For that reason alone, West should claim the title of hip-hop's most successful egomaniac.
CHECK OUT THESE TRACKS: The drum kicks of Fiddy's "I Get Money" are meant to rattle trunk speakers, while West shows that it's OK for a rapper to express paralyzing insecurity and dogged ambition in the same breath on "Big Brother."

Woofy

Cute and plastic, Woofy is a dog that obediently sits next to you all day, holding a pile of cables inside to keep your desktop neat. Designed by Gabriel Nigro, the figures are about the size of a real small dog. We like the way it's a big conspicious design element rather than a way to try to hide cables away like other products.

Shrunken Heads Necklace

Creepy, beautiful and cool, these necklaces by Danish designer Tobias Wistisen features silver mini shrunken heads. Their mix of highly detailed garish features (like the stitches over the mouth) and hair made from delicate silver chains makes for an unusual accessory that's tough to categorize. We recommend the many-headed version for rockstars or review mirrors, but the single pendant works for a more subtle way to ward off bad spirits. Other picks from the collection, like wallet chains with shark fin-like pieces of crocodile leather or stingray have similar attention to detail and design elements referencing mysticism and religion. The necklaces and a few other pieces are available from Behaviour (tel. +1 212 352 8380) in NYC.

Carl

I would like to direct your attention to Yann Le Coroller's Carl. An animated short that is so overloaded with cuteness, I'm throwing up rainbows and stars. There's also a series of free desktops you can download so go ahead, give Carl a home on your computer.

So Hardcore

That's why you rock the new Skullcandy G.I. headphones. For a mere $69.95, you gets some decent headphones decked out with enough accouterments to prove your hardcoreness. Fake bullets, digital camo, and four colors to choose from; desert camo, black, leather, and rasta.

Paper Record Player

Got a couple old school records laying around but don't want to invest in a record player? Why not make your own? All you need is some sturdy paper, a cone, and a steady hand to turn the record at 33 rpm.

The Way I Are

Matchbook Faces

From what I can tell, there are several series, my favorite being the bunny rabbit above. Poor things don't wanna get lit up. Now I'm thinking maybe I should make one with little puppies.

Moller M200G Hovacraft

Moller Industries, the brainchild of inventor Dr. Paul Moller, announced recently that production would begin on the company's M200G volantor, a UFO-esque hovercraft that apparently can "glide over terrain at 50 MPH." Moller, long known for his work in both hovercrafts and flying vehicles has been working on alternative forms of transportation for 40 years. The futuristic looking craft is driven by the company's Rotapower engines, and can allegedly operate up to 10 feet in altitude. Of course, while Moller Industries offers lots of exciting talk about the future of transportation (as well as t-shirts, models, and investment options) to its customers, the company has never brought a vehicle to market. Clearly, the announcement of a "Jetsons-like" craft may fuel enthusiast's hope (and pull in some escrow cash), but the actual production and sale of the $90,000+ vehicle has yet to be seen.

Salt N' Pepper Lego Shakers

This design from Joel Hesselgren is the most ingenious use of Lego for food consumption that we've seen since the LEGO dragon soy sauce and mayonnaise dispenser. The white column holds the salt while the black column holds the pepper, and the amount of each is regulated by how many of the holes are covered at once. You can get an equal distribution of salt and pepper, a 2:1, or just one or the other. Ingenious, and something we'd actually like to see in buyable form.

Oryx

Made of carbon composite, the handlebars, stem and fork are all one piece, with the ergonomic seat post and saddle integrated into the frame. Handlebars connect to frame via a pivot, and the seat even has a hole in it in case you get taken short while cycling to keep you cool while you work the pedals.
The Y-frame shape means that the Oryx is shock-proof and keeps you in contact with the road at all time, and there is a one-sided fork and chain-stay. The crank is designed like a ring and mounted inside the frame on a couple of ball bearings, and the wheels detach from the bike at the push of a button, a useful time-saver for competitions.

Can't Tell Me Nothing

I like this Music Video!

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

It was for adults than the kids. Less than I've expected. Wand duel was OK. Daniel Radcliffe (I'm not sure I've spelled it right) proved to becoming a good actor. Going to read the next book got me hooked.

Samsung Transformer

See, now if Samsung made a working version of this concept Transformer, they could have easily fended off the hordes of iPhone fanboys. Hell, even if the phone itself was janky, I'd still buy one because it's a freakin' TRANSFORMER. There's a little video of it here.

Gresso MP3 Player

Gresso, a well known company for its African Blackwood mobile phone, a phone made of 200 year old wood. And now Gresso have developed MP3 players, the Symphonia Collection. Again it is made from the African Black wood and the front panel is made of a scratch proof 18 carat gold surface. The Symphonia Collection will be available this year and it comes in 1GB of memory and will be priced between US$4000-$6500.

Vertu

Now that so many cellphones are being targeted to women, luxury phone company Vertu decided to go back to its roots and make a manly phone. The Motorsport limited edition (only 997 phones available) takes its cues from the company’s participation in the Porsche eMichelin Supercup and Porsche Infineon Carrera Cup Asai. Say that 5 times fast why dontcha?
The phone is black and made from liquid metal alloy and oil resistant leather, so it’s pretty tough to mess up. And the sapphire crystal screen could show Apple a thing or two about what it means to be scratch-resistant.
It includes the brand’s dedicated concierge service as well as tri-band (GSM 900,1800 and 1900) with Bluetooth and modem support. Oh, and to make sure it’s worth the $5700 price tag, the company claims it actually ran the damn thing over with a racing car. Eat the rich!

WebTime Elite

The unique butterfly clasp that completes the seamless look when closed making the buckle invisible and unifying the strap as one. Of course under the hood no expense was held when throwing in the Super 2035 movement produced by Citizen Japan.
The Super 2035 is a high accuracy movement with a 4 year battery life, so you can rest assure that it will keep time and you won't have to change the battery till the next decade. To tell the time you look at where the colored line intersects with the number markings.
There are two models available; Aqua (Blue resin) or Satsuma (Orange resin). Both look great while wearing a Suit or just a T-shirt & will add a bit of color to your life.Truly one of the nicest watches available at Tokyoflash.

Introducing Connext

The Connext concept by James Zhang takes that ethos to the extreme. Imagine a device made almost entirely of flexible E-paper able to simulate any interface to suit the given application be it a phone, game pad or video watching. What's more, we're talkin' ultra portability since its flexible nature allows it to turn into a watch.
From a full QWERTY keypad to a watch? That's hot.

Just Wanted...

Just wanted to put this picture on my blog. Beautiful isn't she?

Marvel Comics buries Captain America

I'm a comic book fan and yes, folks, Captain America is dead and buried in the latest issue of Marvel Comics' "Fallen Son," due on newsstands the morning after Independence Day. After 66 years of battling villains from Adolf Hitler to the Red Skull, the red, white and blue leader of the Avengers was felled by an assassin's bullet on the steps of a New York federal courthouse.

The Mickey Player

Designed in conjunction with the Magic Kingdom, this pong sized Mplayer sports the famous Mickey head silhouette. The ears act as your basic player controls with the main power button on the side of the head. Between the ears is a standard headphone jack and on the bottom is a mini USB port for syncing. Although screenless it more than makes up for it in cuteness factor. The Mplayer comes with 1GB of memory and barely weighs 18 grams. MP3, WMA, and ASD formats are supported as long as they're unprotected. No word yet on when or if ever the rest of the world will see the player in stores. For now, it's South Korea only selling for $60.
